Session 2 – Writing a reproduction protocol

Protocols, preregistration logic, and choosing the target papers

Wednesday 7 October 2026, 15:00 – 17:00

Student-led inputs

Three group inputs on the theory, each 15 min input + 10 min discussion, based on resources below.

Group Input topic Resource
#3 Transparent Reporting Transparent Reporting for Reproducible Science – 10.1002/jnr.23785
#4 Pre-registrations Pre-registration and Registered Reports: a Primer from UKRN – 10.31219/osf.io/8v2n7
#Extra Reproductions in practice A computational reproducibility study of PLOS ONE articles featuring longitudinal data analyses – 10.1371/journal.pone.0251194

Peer discussion

Each group briefly presents the papers they chose to reproduce (what is the research question?); everyone gives feedback. This discussion will help distribute the target papers to the group with most expertise and also to understand which groups can peer review which other groups work. Each group will chose at least one paper; groups might decide to pick more than one paper if the meta-analysis part is predicted to be especially easy to reproduce.

Instructor

  • Presentation of the reproduction protocol template (Quarto plus a Google Doc version for anyone not yet familiar with Quarto), relating it to the inputs from the first hour: what is specific to a reproduction protocol.
  • Homework briefing.
Homework (1 week, until 14 Oct)

Deep-read the chosen target paper and start drafting the protocol’s content: the hypotheses/claims to be reproduced, the analytic steps, and anticipated deviations compared to original study (if any).
